System description:

Information system: 1C:Enterprise 8

DB Server: MSSQL 2005 Enterprise

DB size: >500GB

Number of users: >1000

Project goals:

Controlled migration of IS and infrastructure to MSSQL 2012 to increase performance and to employ new opportunities.

Applied technologies and solutions:

This goal (controlled migration) was achieved with the SoftpointTrafficSimulator software designed for functional and load testing of DB server prior to the actual migration.

Challenges and features:

The Softpoint Traffic Simulator recorded the sequence of queries to the DB on the current hardware, and then this record was played back  on a new architecture (MS SQL 2012 database server). This comparison discovered potential bottlenecks in terms of performance, then corrective measures were taken.  Thus, neither load modeling, nor interruption of users work were required.

Conslusions:

The above approaches enabled to eliminate risks of IS downtime after migration to MS SQL 2012.  Besides, the comparison fairly showed a more than 1.5 times increase in performance.

This project was given a positive feedback by the experts of VimpelCom.
